This is how I feel. I hope it will give you some insight into who I am, and what I believe.

A very Christian friend of mine recently asked:
"Which is more detrimental to our lives, the lies we tell or the ones we believe?"
...
This was my response to him. I thought I'd share it with you.

.................................

What is truth, and what is fiction?
No one knows anymore.

That is one of the reasons I reject religion and reject the existence of a god.
Religion was created by people... People lie.
Religion, like politics, is about power and control over others. Power corrupts. Mankind is weak, and easily manipulated by superstition or smooth talking con men. We want so much to believe in something greater than ourselves that we become easy prey for the wicked.
If people hear the same lie enough times, they will eventually accept it as the truth. Then, those "truths" are passed on to the next generation, and the next, and so on.

Various religions have sought to control us by blind faith, or intimidation, or forced servitude to some all powerful, all knowing, great and merciful, supreme being that is the creator of all things... Yet, there is no proof that such an entity truly exists.
Throughout history... Millions, if not billions of people have been persecuted, prosecuted, enslaved, tortured, mutilated, or killed in the name of this kind, generous and loving "god" or "gods" that teach peace. Countless wars have been fought over religion. Some are still ongoing. It is a vicious cycle.

I am an Atheist, yet I consider myself as being more tolerant than most Christians, Jews or Muslims.
You have the right to believe in what you want to believe, just as I have the right to reject those beliefs.
As long as your religious beliefs do not call upon you to harm others, I will not judge you on your beliefs, and I expect you to not judge me for mine.
Unless we as a people, can learn to be tolerant of others and accept others for who they are, without regard for religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, or any of the other petty differences that separate us... History is doomed to repeat itself. Civilization will fall.
Long ago, the Catholic Church led people to believe that the Earth was the center of the universe, and that all of creation revolved around us. To speak otherwise was blasphemy, and a direct challenge to the authority of the church.
That was proven to be wrong.

People were once led to believe that the Earth was flat, and if you sailed too far away from the land, you would fall into the abyss and be lost forever..
That was proven to be wrong.

What other historical "truths" need to be revised?

I believe there are many truths out there waiting for us to discover.
But, we will not find the truth of our existence until we stop making war with one another and learn to live in peace.

I also believe that the Earth is as insignificant as a single grain of sand on an endless beach.
One simple planet in a vast universe containing trillions of similar planets capable of supporting life. Many of which probably do.
The Human Race must grow out of its infancy before we can take our place in the universe and truly understand the meaning of life, and of creation itself.

That is, IF the Human Race can survive in spite of itself.

We have the capability to do great things, yet we are hindered by superstition, greed, political corruption, and archaic religious beliefs that have been twisted and corrupted over the centuries by men who crave power.

In most religious denominations, the people are taught that the beliefs of that particular religion are right and everyone else is wrong.

People of some religions are taught to hate those that believe differently. To essentially become "thought police".
Religious beliefs are often forced upon people. Sometimes at the point of a gun.
Even questioning the "word of god" in some parts of the world can mean a violent death.
If everyone thinks they alone are right & everyone else is wrong, then perhaps no one is right.
Perhaps the truth has yet to be revealed to us, or perhaps the truth was once there, but it has been distorted so much that it will never be known as truth again.

Again I ask... "What is truth, and what is fiction?"

Does a god exist? I have no idea.
If there ever was truth in the concept of a "god entity" it has been destroyed by many centuries of religious dogma, corruption and conflict.
It has become nothing more than Chinese whispers.

I simply try to live a decent life, love my family, and respect your right to believe in whatever you wish.
I do not need a "god" or church for that.

We are all victims of the age old battle tactic... Divide and conquer.

Every civilization has been "taught" to believe in something. The early tribes of man were separated by great distances, with little or no contact, and each grew in their own way. Each developed their own traditions, cultures, myths, legends and belief systems. Most "peasants" were uneducated, while those in power reserved education only for the rich. Perpetuating their hold over the "little people" through ignorance.

Every civilization throughout history has had their share of belief systems. There have been thousands of religions throughout our history. However...

Religion was created by humanity, and unscrupulous people have always taken advantage of the power of religion. We also allow politicians to control our lives in much the same way. The people have been divided in so many ways, and for so long that we stay weak and ripe for conquest. Governments and religions alike, seek to strip us of our rights and dictate how we can live our lives, while fanatics on all fronts seek to destroy us if we will not convert or conform to their particular belief system. The more chaos they create in the world, the more restrictions they place on us, the more their power grows. It is a slippery slope. It is also not the first time the Human Race has headed down the path of destruction.

The people do not start the wars, their leaders do. Leaders become so consumed with their own wealth and power that nothing else matters to them except increasing their own wealth and power, and the people have always been used as pawns, or cannon fodder for the rich and powerful.

They start the wars that we are ordered to fight. They create the chaos that we are required to clean up, and too many people accept their fates willingly, because that is what they were taught to believe.

It is their "patriotic" or "spiritual" duty. In the name of the king... Or, for "god and country".

Religious or political corruption, or a combination of both, has been the downfall of every great society. Both breed chaos, fear and hatred of everything that is different.

There are almost 7 billion people living on this planet, yet we are controlled by only a few thousand despots. They can't seem to learn from the mistakes of the past. Or, perhaps this is all by their own design...They continue to profit, and increase their power bases while the people suffer and die for nothing.

We are the paradox. We must get past this "conform or die" mentality and seek peace. If not, we will destroy ourselves.

It is time for the people of the world to speak out against tyranny in all forms and embrace freedom.

It is time for the meek to actually inherit the Earth. Our leaders have failed us.

Many different sources suggest that we are approaching the end times. But, the end of what?

The end of Humanity itself, or simply the end of an era of ignorance?

Armageddon or epiphany... The choice is ours.

Fear prophets... and those prepared to die for the truth, for as a rule they make many others die with them, often before them, at times instead of them.

Beautifully stated, Kyle...and so refreshing. We are all beings in which the suggestive world has a profound imprint on each of our lives. However, with tolerance comes Understanding... with Understanding comes Respect and ultimately harmony!

You may be Atheist, but you are a spiritual Atheist! :~)

Thank you Nina!

You know... A thought just occurred to me as I read your comment...

So often we have heard the phrase, "To know 'god' is to know peace."

Perhaps it is the other way around... We will never know 'god' until we know peace.

Food for thought... Something else to kick around and discuss.

I find that an interesting concept Kyle. I enjoy turning normal concepts upside down... often makes fuel for thought. I am a spiritual Atheist and like you, I truly believe we are just a speck of sand in the Pacific ocean's floor. I feel that all life is connected..... if we could get out of our narcissistic illusion or maybe delusion (lol) and see with clearer vision. Human nature has always been very egocentric as you described above. Our species believed the earth was the center of our solar system. We always need to feel more valuable or important than all other life. What if, all other life has the same mental capacity as us, only that we are not gifted with their extensions and cannot either hear, conceptualize or understand their language. What does that make us?

If the scientific premise that "matter can neither be created, nor destroyed" is true, then each of us, and everything around us is comprised of matter that is as old as the universe itself. It has only been reorganized in different ways over billions of years by various means.

So, what does that make us?

A part of the universe itself. Albeit a very small piece of the greater puzzle.

We have always existed, and we always will... Just not in the form we are occupying right now.

Dear Friend Kyle: "Matter can neither be created nor destroyed". That explains why the Grand Slam Breakfast at Denny's cannot be digested!

There you have it. Something that believers, atheists and agnostics can all share in common. Its a start, anyway.

Interesting read, my good friend. Thanks for writing and sharing your thoughts. Each must live life on their own terms. Everyone must go through a journey to find the path best suited for them.

G-d bless, Enoch.

Clever but it won't work

There are quite a few mistakes in your logic.

1) “What is truth, and what is fiction? No one knows anymore.” Nonsense! There are a million things you know as reality. If you didn’t, you would walk in front of a bus. Who knows if a bus is real? Bah!

2) “Religion was created by people...”. That’s an assumption. It is just as likely there is a religion out there from God as not. If you base assumptions are suspect, so are your conclusions. You need to tell us what your assumption is based on. Evidence?

3) “Yet, there is no proof that such an entity truly exists.” Yet there is evidence, the Big Bang being one. also - “In 1961, astronomers acknowledged just two characteristics of the universe as "fine-tuned" to make physical life possible.1 The more obvious one was the ratio of the gravitational force constant to the electromagnetic force constant. It cannot differ from its value by any more than one part in 1040 (one part in ten thousand trillion trillion trillion) without eliminating the possibility for life. Today, the number of known cosmic characteristics recognized as fine-tuned for life—any conceivable kind of physical life—stands at thirty-eight.2 Of these, the most sensitive is the space energy density (the self-stretching property of the universe). Its value cannot vary by more than one part in 10120 and still allow for the kinds of stars and planets physical life requires.”

4) Religion isn’t the cause of all wars. Hitler was an atheist. In my opinion war and human suffering is so off the scale that it has to have a supernatural source. Satan?

5) “learn to be tolerant of others and accept others” There are many religions out there that actually teach tollerance.

6) Logically most religions are going to be filled with lies because they are all different and there can be only one truth. (X cannot be X AND not X at the same time) So the question isn’t are there religions that believe lies, but is there evidence that one of them believe truth.

7) anthropic principle By the end of 2001, astronomers had identified more than 150 finely-tuned characteristics.4 In the 1960s the odds that any given planet in the universe would possess the necessary conditions to support intelligent physical life were shown to be less than one in ten thousand.5 In 2001 those odds shrank to less than one in a number so large it might as well be infinity (10173).

8) “If there ever was truth in the concept of a "god entity" it has been destroyed by many centuries of religious dogma, corruption and conflict.” Why? If there is a god he would have no trouble preserving a source of truth on the planet.

Your article, while sounding high minded and noble is mostly nonsence backed by neither logic or evidence. The only way to discover truth is with an open mind. Most people are unwilling to open there mind because of cognitive dissonance. If there is a god, most people don’t want to know it because it might inhibit what you call freedom. But I have found that “the truth will set you free” “Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say.” Cognitve Dissonance. Open your mind and do some reading.

Apparently the Easy Mode drops HTML web references and changes "to the power of" (smaller type) numbers. I'll try the web address in XHTML mode. This is a great website. If it doesn't show Google Reasons to Believe and then search: "Anthropic Principle: A Precise Plan for Humanity"
The website should be easier to read.

      @Clever but it won't work

Your belief in God and Satan is just that... A belief backed by no empirical evidence and why we call it a belief system. There is no absolute proof. We really do Not know! Science continues to change their concepts and hypothesis as our species develop. Even Einstein's theory of Relativity, Space and Time Quantum Gravity was not applicable with black holes and could still change as we increase our knowledge.

Religion was created in order to ease the fear of the unknown with the design of a God and Satan. Always in a dichotomy or dualism which has a profound impact on the threat of war. Adolf Hitler was not an Atheist. He attended the Catholic church as a child. His specific religious views seem to be up for debate because they often contradicted each other. He criticized organized religion but still believed in a god and a member in good standing with the Church of Rome. His plight on the millions of Jewish deaths had its roots deep in religion as he stated publicly that he wanted to protect the ..... Aryan Christ with the removal (extermination) of the Jews!!!

I'm sorry for your loss Nina. It is always difficult to lose someone close to us.

@ Clever... Thank you for replying.

Your initial arguments are also flawed.

My article began with "This is how I feel." It is an opinion piece, not scientific fact. It is simply the compilation of my thoughts on the subject. It is not right, wrong, or indifferent. It is simply my opinion, based on my personal observations of the world around me, and my life experiences to date. It is simply a topic for discussion.

The big bang theory is just that... a theory. Since we cannot go back in time to view what actually happened, we no not really know how the universe was created, or why.

Religion was in fact created by mankind. It is mankind's way of dealing with our own mortality. The thought of simply ceasing to exist is too much for most of us, so we created an "afterlife" in which we can exist forever, thus comforting ourselves when dealing with loss of loved ones. How convenient.

If an all seeing, all knowing, omnipotent, kind, benevolent, great and merciful, loving 'god' did exist, why would this being require people to worship it? Why would such a being allow the human race to tear itself apart in its name?

If I were such a being, with such great power that I could create the universe, don't you think I would have the ability to pop in, prove that I exist, and tell the Human Race to pull its head out of its backside?

I did not say that religion was the cause of ALL wars. But it has been the cause of many. Politicians can pretty much account for the rest.

Many religions "preach" tolerance, then fail to lead by example. Religion is flawed, because mankind is flawed.

I did open my mind. I have done much reading on the subject. In fact, I was once a priest, but the more I delved into scripture, the more I realized that I had more questions than answers, the more I began to reject it. So, my perspective does have a certain merit. I am not saying I am right or wrong. I am merely trying to get people to open their minds to other possibilities, and understand that no one has the right to force one certain belief system upon another person, or judge someone that believes something different.

We are all the sum of our own life experiences. Each of us are different in our own way. We are all flawed, but that doesn't mean that we can't learn to be tolerant of one another and co-exist in peace.

The alternative to peace, is continued violence and chaos. Our entire history is war after war. Conflict after conflict. We have proven that even though we have become a technologically advanced species, we have still learned nothing.

I enjoyed your article very much! I like to hear other's opinions, then compare or contradict them to my own. Anyone who values knowledge needs to have an open mind. I believe all is connected, but cannot say how with proof or clarity. I was raised Catholic, and also lost the relevance, due to delving in and studying, clear back in 7th grade! My beliefs cover many areas too, Religion itself may or may not be a *comfort zone* to many, but belonging to a certain church or religion is not a necessity in discovering self-awareness, at least imo. Thanks for the interesting read.

I am not trying to bash anyone's faith, I am simply trying to get people to open their minds and embrace peace, before it is too late.

      @ Clever... You stated:

      7) anthropic principle By the end of 2001, astronomers had identified more than 150 finely-tuned characteristics.4 In the 1960s the odds that any given planet in the universe would possess the necessary conditions to support intelligent physical life were shown to be less than one in ten thousand.5 In 2001 those odds shrank to less than one in a number so large it might as well be infinity (10173).

The universe itself is infinite. It is beyond our comprehension.

However, we exist on a single planet, in one solar system, in a single galaxy that spans approximately 100,000 light years across. Our galaxy alone contains billions of stars, and scientists are discovering proof of planets orbiting those stars.

I suggest you take a look at the Hubble deep space field images. They reveal the existence of literally trillions of galaxies, (each containing billions of stars) some at a distance of over 13 billion light years away. And, that is just as far as we are able to see right now. Who knows how many more will be revealed as our technological ability advances?

If just ONE planet in each galaxy, or even one planet in a billion galaxies is capable of supporting life, then I submit to you that life in the universe is abundant.

Kyle! Again well stated. Something of interest which I am sure you already know but will state anyway. The wobble effect on the stars are a good indication of planets within their solar system. They are finding new planets almost every day. I find that quite exciting. Maybe someday, we can utilize worm holes for transportation? What is science fiction today, is often the science of tomorrow. Have an enjoyable day!

      Kyle,

Your articles is like a shotgun, as it is hit all over the place. I do not mean this in any disrespectful way; I understand the connections clearly.

      Religion

      Science

      Politics

      Philosophy

      What someone believes........................

Where does one start with the response? I will start with a question as the main underlying theme of your article seems to be peace.

What is peace? Does peace mean that I think the same way you do, or you think the same way I do. Perhaps peace is to remain silent, indifferent, and judge the morality of our own emotions concerning our beliefs. War is personal, as is peace.

      Religion........................

Countless wars have been fought over religion.

In their Encyclopedia of Wars,[2] authors Charles Phillips and Alan Axelrod attempt a comprehensive listing of wars in history. They document 1763 wars overall, of which 123 (7%) have been classified to involve a religious conflict.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_war

      Truth.......................................

Everybody has it, but nobody will ever completely know it. Without prejudice, stripped everything away, and look deeply inside to the core; to the location of your inner voice, and there's the truth; you have found it. Now you want to know what it is, but the face cannot look upon the face. There are choices. You must either accept the truth inside of you as a reality without evidence; be at peace. Or reject the truth as personal madness; be at war with oneself. Nonetheless, each is a reality; each is a certainty.

      Science...............

      Your viewpoint confuses me.

Religion was created by people... People lie.

We want so much to believe in something greater than ourselves

      http://blogs.nature.com/boboh/2010/11/17/rates-of-scientific-fraud

      http://discovermagazine.com/2000/oct/featblunders

      http://discovermagazine.com/2000/oct/featblunders

      This also confused me........................

      Mankind is weak,

I also believe that the Earth is as insignificant as a single grain of sand on an endless beach.

And then you go on to say..........

We have the capability to do great things, yet we are hindered by superstition, greed, political corruption, and archaic religious beliefs that have been twisted and corrupted over the centuries by men who crave power.

Mankind is weak? We have the capabilities to do great things?

      I'm confused?

Noting that science is missing from the list of hindering attributes, I offer this confusing information.............................

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christian_thinkers_in_science

Please read the list carefully (especially Georges Lemaître). I know the list is long, but laziness is not the path to understanding and peace.

In closing I leave you with your own statement.........................

Again I ask... "What is truth, and what is fiction?"

Let me try to clarify things better for you.

Religion itself is an invention of mankind. Early civilizations didn't have the capacity for scientific understanding of things, They did not understand that the sun was just a giant ball of flaming hydrogen, or that the moon was just a great big chunk of rock, or that stars were just other big balls of flaming hydrogen farther away, or that lightning is static electricity, etc. so everything that was unexplainable was attributed to the supernatural. Superstition and fear of the unknown was rampant, and individuals used that superstition and fear to gain power for themselves. Lies compounded superstitions and enhanced the fears of the people. If something went wrong, well the spirits must be angry. So they started holding rituals, sacrifices, etc. to appease these non-existent "spirits". And, of course these rituals had to be performed by chieftains, or high priests, or by whatever powerful figure that was invented for that purpose. Countless religions and deities were created. Religion quickly became a control mechanism for those in power. And, some leaders eventually promoted themselves to the status of "living gods". Their word was law. People lived and died at their whim.

Multiply this by thousands of isolated tribes, scattered throughout different parts of the world. Languages, cultures, belief systems evolved in their own way. Lies, or superstitions became myths, myths became legends, legends became religions, etc. Differences became evil, and a threat to the established power bases of each tribe. Many wars were fought by those who rose to power, and as always, the people suffer and die over the folly of the few. Whether it is a holy war or just the greed/lust of bad leaders.

And, yes. Mankind is weak. Then, and today as well. We still fall victim to the lies and deceit of religions and political "leaders" who would sacrifice millions of people to stay in power. I say that mankind is weak, because we still let it happen to this day. We still accept lies as truth, and fight over it. Right is left, left is right, up is down. Corruption runs rampant.

Are you familiar with the story of the Whore of Babylon? Essentially describing a "false prophet" or "false religion" that will trick the people into killing one another in the name of "god", thus ensuring the perpetuation (or victory) of evil. Sound familiar? The entire world is filled with them. It has been happening throughout recorded history, and it is happening right now. The weak minded are buying into religious dogma hook, line, and sinker. The Human Race is on the verge of completely destroying itself. Over what? Some invisible dude in the sky that no one has ever seen?

The Earth IS insignificant. We are nothing compared to the rest of the universe. And, once we realize that we are not the reason for creation, but only a small part of it, we will finally take the next baby step in our own evolution.

We will finally realize that war solves nothing. Violence and hatred solves nothing. Believe what you want to believe and let others believe in what they wish. Live and let live. Anyone that would tell you that you should harm someone in the name of any "god" or religion, real or imagined, is nothing more than a Whore of Babylon.

We do have the the capacity for greatness. One day, we may venture to and colonize distant worlds, meet other species, and learn what is really out there. Provided we do not destroy ourselves first.

We must get past our own ignorance and arrogance, and embrace peace. Otherwise, "Armageddon" will be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

We have had many thousands of years of war and conflict. What harm is there in peace?

You have the right to believe in what you want to believe, just as I have the right to reject those beliefs.
As long as your religious beliefs do not call upon you to harm others, I will not judge you on your beliefs, and I expect you to not judge me for mine.
Unless we as a people, can learn to be tolerant of others and accept others for who they are, without regard for religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, or any of the other petty differences that separate us...

Amen to that! Thanks for a thought provoking article, Kyle.

Religion itself is an invention of mankind.

everything we do is an invention? the very words you used to express yourself is an invention. what is the intention of your words?

Early civilizations didn't have the capacity for scientific understanding.

hence, faith. (the term faith is not to be construed as religion). Faith is necessary. the very nature of consciousness depends upon it. imagine knowing everything. there would be no room for a question, contemplation, language, etc. Knowing the absolute truth would destroy what we are. Do you understand the implication?

Superstition and fear of the unknown was rampant, and individuals used that superstition and fear to gain power for themselves. Lies compounded superstitions and enhanced the fears of the people.

Iraqi has weapons of mass destruction; giant mushroom cloud!!!;.. did not come out of the mouth of a priest.

If something went wrong, well the spirits must be angry. So they started holding rituals, sacrifices, etc. to appease these non-existent "spirits".

what are the military men and woman dying on the battlefield (alter of the ultimate sacrifice)?

And, of course these rituals had to be performed by chieftains, or high priests, or by whatever powerful figure that was invented for that purpose.

      the president & congress?

Countless religions and deities were created. Religion quickly became a control mechanism for those in power. And, some leaders eventually promoted themselves to the status of "living gods". Their word was law. People lived and died at their whim.

look around kyle! countless countries (ideologies). just take your statement and insert government in place of religion, and tell me what is the difference aside of a name change. don't you see that religion comes in many flavors. for Americans, the apostles are the founding fathers, and just like religion, there words have been twisted to accommodate the times.

Differences became evil, and a threat to the established power bases of each tribe. Many wars were fought by those who rose to power, and as always, the people suffer and die over the folly of the few. Whether it is a holy war or just the greed/lust of bad leaders.

differences is the ally of the minority who want control (divide and conquer). they just wait in the side lines until the atheist and people of faith exhaust themselves fighting with one another, and then come in with one knockout blow . they are not stupid kyle; they have been doing it for a long long time, and know their Kraft well. many wars were not fought by those in power; they were fought by suckers like us.

Corruption runs rampant.

this is the part of your shotgun blast that hit dead center of the target. i agree with (let me look again); yes, i agree completely with what you said above. this of course leaves me somewhat puzzled, in light of everything you stated beforehand seems to but the burden of error on the premise of theological interferences.

Are you familiar with the story of the Whore of Babylon? Essentially describing a "false prophet" or "false religion" that will trick the people into killing one another in the name of "god", thus ensuring the perpetuation (or victory) of evil. Sound familiar?

      here. consider this.......

On August 15th of this year (1871), Albert Pike writes a letter (now catalogued in the British Museum) to Guiseppe Mazzini in which he states the following,

(before reading the rest of this, i wish to add that the curator of the British Museum announced that he had no such letter in his possession catalogued. Nevertheless, as you say there is rampant corruption that always enters into the equation. This is a readers choice offering)

"We shall unleash the nihilists and the atheists and we shall provoke a great social cataclysm which in all its horror will show clearly to all nations the effect of absolute atheism; the origins of savagery and of most bloody turmoil.

Then everywhere, the people will be forced to defend themselves against the world minority of the world revolutionaries and will exterminate those destroyers of civilization and the multitudes disillusioned with Christianity whose spirits will be from that moment without direction and leadership and anxious for an ideal, but without knowledge where to send its adoration, will receive the true light through the universal manifestation of the pure doctrine of Lucifer brought finally out into public view.

A manifestation which will result from a general reactionary movement which will follow the destruction of Christianity and Atheism; both conquered and exterminated at the same time."

Pike, who having been elected as Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry's Southern Jurisdiction in 1859, was the most powerful Freemason in America. He would retain that post for 32 years until his death in 1891. He also published a book on the subject in 1872 entitled, "Morals and Dogma of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry," in which he candidly states the following,

"LUCIFER, the Light-bearer! Strange and mysterious name to give to the Spirit of Darknesss! Lucifer, the Son of the Morning! Is it he who bears the Light, and with its splendors intolerable blinds feeble, sensual or selfish Souls? Doubt it not!"

Some invisible dude in the sky that no one has ever seen?

when you use such terminology, you offend many people who have such a belief, and that promote peace. Who's side are you on? you do realize that their are very, very, very intelligent people who believe in such things, and there are very, very, very, many people who don't have the time or ability to look into things with such depth. consequentially, the energy need to survive in this world, make the latter more numerous. kyle, i gave you the long list of Christian thinkers that contributed to the field of science. The list is overwhelming. the very theory of the big bang was the idea of a priest who believed in that ...

invisible dude in the sky that no one has ever seen?

if i were to do a search of all the Buddhists, Muslims, Hindu, etc. who contributed to the field of science ( also people who believe in" invisible guys" Exluding perhaps Buddhist), the list of atheist would be in comparison, in your words......

"as insignificant as a single grain of sand on an endless beach."

i do not mean any disrespect by pointing this out, as there is no doubt that atheist are very, very, very, intelligent people; and there are some that don't have the time to improve. but it is important to keep things in the correct perspective. Your time spent sighting people of belief, regardless of the "let's all just get along" does not work together well. The argument you are engaging in is a difficult, well ......

you want people to stop engaging in the activity of telling others that they are wrong and how to think and live their lives, and then this....

I will not judge you on your beliefs, and I expect you to not judge me for mine.
Unless we as a people, can learn to be tolerant of others and accept others for who they are, without regard for religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, or any of the other petty differences that separate us

listen kyle, the future is scary as result of our own doing, but you have got to clear your understanding of what is at work. everything that you bring up is the surface of the problem and not the underlying reality. as a person who appreciates science you should understand this concept that runs deeply into the very fabric of our knowledge. even though these underplaying realities (i am not talking religion here), they are at work. some of us are comfortable with the classic view of reality; these are the Newtonian's(practical world people (body)) of our society. some are relativist (Einsteinist's (logic)). some are quantonian's (quantum (spirit)).

When a apple falls on the head of an Newtonian's he/she thinks that it is the invisible gravity god.

when an Einsteinist's considers his paper theory that e=mc2 he turns to his bible; to the book of Euclidean and reads.....

"things that are equal to each other are equal to the same thing"

and he/she ponders the thing equal to each other by what is the invisible same thing.

this is funny ....you got to watch it..........

      Perpetual Motion

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvRzWYCZ2e0

when the Quantonian's (already well adjusted to the weirdness of reality) consider how an electron can know that it is being watched, and then consider that they can only observe a small portion of reality, they are left to wonder about the invisible eyeball that is responsible for the image that reality holds.

this is interesting ......you have got to watch it.......

i being the wackaloon that i am, proudly fit into anyone of these three categorize!!! these categorize can also be attributed to theology (not religion), and philosophy, and i have a membership card to all three (not a church). i must say that i have tried to let my membership to politics' lapse, but they automatically extract the dues. thank god the church & NASA, doesn't have such power.

one last video to make my points here. look into this scientists (he is not the pope) eyes and feel what he is feeling. next listen to the theological analogy he is comparing himself to. there is wisdom in the old words of the past Kyle........you have shut the outside interference off and take the time to dig for the gold. Don't worry about if you are digging in the wrong place; everywhere is the right place.

      My main points are:

Politics and religion are both responsible for most of our problems. Mainly due to internal corruption, and intolerance for differing points of view.

Our beliefs are our own. What someone else believes is not our business, as long as they are not trying to cause harm to us.

My primary hope is that people of different belief systems can learn to set aside their differences and choose peace, instead of perpetuating eternal conflict.
